ACES Program - Spring 2019

The Spring 2019 ACES program will take place on Saturday, June 1st, 2019! Experiments will include:

Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream - An ultra-cold treat, ultra-fast!

Colorful Chemistry - Learn about invisible ink and bring color to life!

Balloon-powered Cars - Design an aerodynamic race car powered by a blown-up balloon! Put your vehicle to the test against other future scientists.

Making Gold Nanoparticles - Use tea leaves to make colorful gold nanoparticles!

Separating Dyes with Electricity - Use gel-like substances and electricity to move and separate different dye molecules- a very colorful experiment that will spark excitement in young scientists!

Spaghetti Marshmallow Towers - Become an engineer for the day, as you construct the tallest tower you can from common household food items.

Note that some of the experiments are the same as those from the Fall, but each student will be participating in the opposite experiments from last time.

Chemiluminescence in the Kitchen - Use a chemical reaction to produce light!

Making Batteries with Food - Test different fruits to see which of them conduct electricity!

Chromatography of Colors - Use separation techniques to create a rainbow!

Goofy Putty - A fun activity with Dow chemists

Note that the experiments are the same as those from the string, but each student will be participating in opposite experiments from last time.

ACES Program - Fall 2017

The eighth ACES program will take place on October 21, 2017! Experiments will include:

  • "Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream" - a delicious Non-Newtonian fluid!
  • “My DNA Bracelet”- Students will explore the role of DNA and genetics in determining their physical traits and create their unique "DNA Bracelet".
  • “Wastewater Treatment and the Environment” - Students will learn how wastewater is treated to be reused and what environmental challenges exist in maintaining a safe water supply.
  • "Serie-ous Circuits" - Students will design and create a working electrical circuit using just a pencil and a piece of paper.
  • “Playing with Polymers”- Students will explore the science of polymers and understand how connecting long strands of molecules together can turn liquids into solid gels. Skills: polymer science, crosslinking, gelation
  • “Cooking with Science”- Students will learn the concept of emulsion by making salad dressing from the scratch.

 

Kids will take home a bag with the ACES logo, several souvenirs from the experiments, a Certificate of Participation (with a list of practiced skills), and a lab notebook containing activities and take-home instructions!

  • Atmospheric Gases - students will explore the amazing (and sometimes scary) properties of gases found in our atmosphere!
  • The Spaghetti Challenge - students will compete in teams to make the tallest, strongest tower using a very specific set of materials!
  • Magnetism - Students will learn about magnetic fields and make a magnetic material themselves!
  • Invisible Power of Pressure - students will learn about pressure and momentum in this exciting activity.
  • Vitamin Citrus - students will test several juices to determine their vitamin C content and test some other cool citrus properties as well!

ACES Booth at the Philadelphia Science Festival

The ACES program sponsored a booth at the Philadelphia Science Festival's Science Carnival on May 2nd , 2015 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. 

Our booth was titled "Can you use chemistry to understand these mysterious potions?" Students who came to our booth used chemistry to reveal a secret message, which included instructions for the second part of the booth, where they coated nails with copper.

The first ACES program took place on July 19th, 2014! Experiments included:

  • Oobleck & Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream - Non-Newtonian Fluids!

  • Isolating DNA
  • Electroplating Pennies
  • Silly Putty and Polymerization Basics

Kids took home several souvenirs, as well as a bag with the ACES logo, and information sheets about each of their experiments!
